What a sad sight!
We took some friends out for a very relaxing sail on Sunday Feb 2, and as we were walking back to the car, I noticed what at first glance appeared to be an early afternoon barbeque. Just a faint wisp of smoke was coming from the powerboat at first. It took less then five minutes from the first notice of smoke to the time the fire was totally engulfing the powerboat and began to spread to the adjacent sailboat. Unfortunately it took the fire department 12 minutes from the time we called 911 to respond to the fire.

This picture was taken only 4 minutes after calling the fire department
We tired to attract the attention of anyone who may have been on thier boats, to no avail. We finely noticed the guy in the grey tee shirt try to use a garden hose to put out the fire but it was already too late for a hose that small.

Trying to move the neighboring sailboat out of danger.
By now the down wind sailboat is on fire too. Someone tried to move the sailboat that was in the up wind slip.

Throw another boat on the fire???
As soon as the boat cleared the slip it started to drift right into the burning powerboat. They did manage to get the boat out of the way.

The Smoke Thickins.
By now the fire is really out of control and the down wind sailboat is burning out of control also. Right after this picture was taken the mast came crashing to the ground.

Total Loss.
Anyone out there who has seen a boat burn will know what a helpless feeling it is to watch something like this. The intensity of burning fiberglass is an awesome sight. I spoke to one of the people from the port of Oakland and he said that no one had been injured in the fire.
